City police work refutes lighting security argument

I was thrilled to hear that the County Council Public Works Committee is finally doing something about these horrible white lights that are ruining our lovely island. There is no need for such bright and obtrusive lighting. I think one can hit a bucket of balls or play baseball with lights not quite so harmful.

As a former Los Angeles policeman, I am amazed and saddened by Council Member Riki Hokama’s uneducated comment about bright, white lighting helping curb the drug and crime problem on Lanai. If Riki had done some homework, he would realize that yellow lighting is just as bright and lights an area just as much as that horrible white lighting does without hurting the environment.

Maybe he should work with the police force on other ways to keep crime and drugs under control rather than relying on light bulbs!

Thank you so much for bringing this very important issue to light (Editorial, Oct. 20)!
