Synopsis
My dance training and fervor are in the disciplines of Modern, African, and African-American dance. I am working to help create a Swing dance community on Maui. To that end I am offering dance classes, working to organize a Maui Swing Dance Society, and working with others to produce Swing dance events. Much of the Swing dance that has been taught over the years has completely diverged from the African-American origin of Swing. It is important to me to propagate what the African-American community of Harlem created in the 1920s-40s, so I focus on teaching Savoy-style Lindy hop. At the same time as I want to perpetuate these choreographic inventions, I also emphasize the open-ended potential for current creativity in this dance form.
Tango Teaching
- 2007. Offering lessons in beginning close-embrace (Milonguero style) tango with several private clients.
Swing Dance Teaching
- 2000. Group lessons for the Maui Swing Dance Society dances, McCoy Studio Theater, Wailuku, and Makawao Union Church Community Hall, Paia.
- 1999. Private lessons for several students.
