What is Savoy Style? It is the original style of Swing dance that African-Americans invented at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem in the 1920s-30s. It has a movement vocabulary, expressiveness, and just plain attitude that got left out as Swing dance was modified for the ballroom and studio, but which I endeavor to learn and pass along.
Lee Altenberg got started Swing dancing in the thriving scene of Durham, NC, in the early 90s, and has studied Lindy Hop with Frankie Manning, Erin Stevens, Steven Mitchell, and Chris Yee. He began teaching Swing dance in 1998 to college and high school students in Nashville, and has taught classes on Maui with the Maui Dance Council, Hapa's, Maui Community College, Maui Academy of Performing Arts, and private lessons. He has also studied Modern dance since 1990, African dance since 1996, and played trombone in the UC Berkeley jazz big band before discovering the dance floor.
