Swing Dance Social: The first Swing Dance Social was a great success, so we're trying this format again...A little party for people to finish up their weekend, practice their moves, and meet people. The Swing Dance Social is for the whole community, not just the participants in the MSDS meeting.
----> Special Showing: From 8-8:15pm, Lee Altenberg will show 15 minutes of Lindy Hop clips, including "After Seben" (1929), "Hellzapoppin'" (1942), and the Lindy Jam from Frankie Manning's 80th Birthday party (1994).
MSDS Agenda: Candy Croteau of the Maui Arts and Cultural Center has given the Maui Swing Dance Society the go ahead to hold regular Swing dances at the McCoy Theater. They are holding the date of March 3, 2000 for us. So now we just need to put on the show! Here are some specific jobs that need to be filled:
- Two people to train as disk jockeys to run the sound system.
- People to sell tickets at the door and sign up new MSDS members.
- A treasurer to keep books on Maui Swing Dance Society revenues and expenditures.
Other tasks:
- Publicizing the event.
- Someone with equipment to cut some playlist CDs for the dances, to simplify the DJing task. For sources, I have a good collection of Swing (20s-50s jazz, Country Swing, 40s-50s Rhythm and Blues, Rockabilly) but I am limited in music for West Coast Swing, and perhaps someone can fill in there.
Other Agenda Items:
- Making Swing Dance Socials regular MSDS events.
- Adopting a formal structure - bylaws, means for revenue, membership fees, etc.
DIRECTIONS:
- From Hana highway: Proceed 2 miles past Ho'okipa Look-out, turn right onto Haiku Road. Go 1.5 miles into Haiku. In downtown
Haiku, Kokomo road starts at the Haiku Marketplace. From the
Marketplace go up the hill 2 miles. The Fourth Marine Division
State Park will be on the left. The next left-past the park-is Kapii
Street. Turn left there. Go to the end of the street and pull into our driveway.
- From upcountry: Go to the 4 way stop at Makawao Ave. and
Kaupakalua Ave. Turn down hill onto Kokomo and proceed 1.8
miles. Kapii Street will be on the right. Go to the end of the
street and pull into our driveway.
