Using OS X Mail.app Rules to Resist GMail
Any e-mail I receive from @gmail.com is responded to automatically with this message:
Dear Gmail user:
Dear Gmail user:
I received your e-mail; this reply is automatically generated. As you may know, e-mail from or to gmail.com is not private, but is data-mined to provide advertising income for Google. It comprises a new intrusion of commerce into personal communication. I cannot abide with that, and will not be a party to GMail's advertising transactions. So I do not send e-mail to gmail.com addresses except for this reply. I would greatly appreciate if you could provide me with an address from an e-mail provider that does not data-mine the content of my e-mail. Moreover, I would encourage you to resist this commercialization of personal communication and cancel your GMail account. See

Feel free to use this text in your own auto-reply rules.
A reader pointed out to me that if you receive a GMail message through a group e-mail list, a problem may appear if your auto-reply goes back to the entire list. People will tire of the auto-reply message after getting it a few times. Therefore, after it has gone out to the list once (which is helpful in spreading the word about GMail), you may want to add additional conditions to your GMail rule (in Mail.app on Mac OS X):
If | all | of the following conditions are met:
| From | Contains | @gmail.com
| Reply-to | Does not contain | [ADDRESS OF 1st GROUP LIST YOU'RE ON]
| Reply-to | Does not contain | [ADDRESS OF 2nd GROUP LIST YOU'RE ON]
etc.
Perform the following actions:
| Reply to Message | Reply message text ... |
In addition, you may want a second GMail rule to handle cases in which the From: is not a GMail account, but the Reply-to: is:
If | all | of the following conditions are met:
| Reply-to | Contains | @gmail.com
Perform the following actions:
| Reply to Message | Reply message text ... |
