• WHERE: Makawao Union Church, 1445 Baldwin Avenue (2.5 miles above Paia)

• WHY: Since there are currently no regular events where people on Maui can go to Swing dance, people are needed to organize them. In many places around the country, people have organized non-profit, volunteer Swing dance societies to hold dances and offer other events, such as workshops by guest teachers. Examples include the Philadelphia Swing Dance Society, S. Florida SDS, Edinburgh SDS, Dallas SDS, NY SDS, Houston SDS, Chicago SDS, Syracuse SDS, Tokyo SDS, Boston SDS, Connecticut SDS, Perth SDS, Montreal SDS, SW Virginia SDS, you get the picture.

I got into Swing thanks to the Triangle Swing Dance Society in Durham, North Carolina. It is now 10 years old, and holds twice monthly dances with live bands that draw 250-350 dancers, as well as workshops and practice parties. It is a volunteer-run, charitable corporation (click here to read their bylaws).

This organizing meeting will be open to all ideas for how to proceed---organization goals, structure, activities, etc. I will facilitate the discussion with the hope that some concrete action will come out of it for the next step in getting Swing going on Maui.

Note: The Makawao Union Church has a huge hall that the Maui Dance Council has use of on Monday and Tuesday nights. It could be a potential site to hold dances.
